WHAT WE BELIEVE
Virginia Wildlife Protection is a voice for Virginia’s wildlife, dedicated to protecting habitats and wildlife, and inspiring young conservationists and their families to protect their environment. We believe education is one of the primary means of furthering our goals of a safeguarded, abundant and prosperous Virginia.
The future of Virginia and that of our country depends on a well-informed public to be responsible keepers of the environment that supports us, our families, our societies and our children. Environmental education can help us to not only understand the links between environmental health, the good of our society, financial prosperity, and our well-being as members of a society, it can also help us reinforce our national identity.
WE STRIVE TO UPHOLD THE SPIRIT OF CONSERVATION
The American identity has long been linked with its wildlife and landscapes. Virginia has been one of the major keepers of this national identity. After all it is the home of the bald eagle, the symbol of America. While industrialization and the changing nature of our economic activities have changed our environment before we realized, we believe it is not too late to turn the tide.
Virginians today are quite vocal about bringing nature back. In fact, since climate change has become an issue, a public poll in the state has revealed that the majority of Virginians want the state to craft plans that cut carbon emissions, and encourage clean energy and efficiency. This is encouraging news for educators like us, because it gives us pliable clay to mold, so to speak.
WE AIM TO PRESERVE THE AMERICAN IDENTITY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
We recognize that the desire to protect wildlife and natural resources has moved Americans across the country since her birth. No matter their identity or background, hunters, farmers, forest rangers, hikers, ornithologists, cyclists, bikers, fishing enthusiasts and others have come together in a spirit of conservation. This spirit is fundamental to our identity, and it is this spirit that we want to nurture and pass on to our future generations, while helping to preserve our natural resources for them.
No matter where we live, as Americans and as Virginians we have strong ties to our land. Our land – from the Chesapeake salt waters and its rich diversity to the peaks and caverns of the forested Appalachians – provides us with spiritual nourishment. And we in turn have a duty to protect all of this for the future, just as our ancestors did who passed on the land to us.
That the state of Virginia must take up climate change and turn to more sustainable energy sources, helping wildlife habitats and their residents survive and adapt.
That our communities and our children deserve clean air, water and wildlife on our public lands.
That healthy rivers, coasts, lakes, mountains, plateaus, forests, wetlands and marshes are essential for economic prosperity, our wildlife and the health of the people.
That the state has a duty to use the best available scientific knowledge and technology to protect the diversity and abundance of Virginia’s wildlife and habitats, especially the lands that are ecologically important for the people and for nature.
That we Virginians have the duty to do whatever we can to safeguard our land and its wildlife.
That each one of us have a right to enjoy, explore and protect the wildernesses of Virginia.
That we have a duty to educate our children about the state’s biological diversity and the benefits that wildlife bring to human society.
WHO WE ARE
Virginia Wildlife Protection is an eco-friendly non-profit organization in Virginia, channeling the members’ dedication and love for the environment to educate, bring about change and inspire future generations of conservationists. We are as passionate about the nature and wildlife of the Old Dominion as you are. But we believe there needs to be more of us. Our hope and objective is to do what we can to make more young people and adults fall in love with the wild.
WHAT WE DO
Our primary activity is education, and we work towards it through advocacy, engagement and outreach. At Virginia Wildlife Protection, we are committed to advocating and nurturing conservation movements across Virginia, to inspire local and state bodies to take action. We try to extend resources where there is enthusiasm and ideas, and we try to courteously bridge the environmental literacy gap wherever it exists.
